Chilly days so far in Chicago. Was summer even here?! BUT I get to wear my fall sweaters (which I love!) I really do enjoy fall out of the rest, just for its fashion! ;)

inspiration journal: http://www.lovesylvia.tumblr.com

I’ve been quite busy updating my ‘new’ and ‘other’ journal. I have decided that I wanted to separate a few things. I have mentioned awhile ago that I am in the process of making www.lovesylvia.com official- this site will only show my “best” work. That isn’t quite done, yet. HOWEVER, I noticed something interesting in my every- day- life- pattern, and thought of a great solution. I search the web- a lot. I read- a lot. I am constantly looking for things every day- and a lot. I have SO many interesting articles, photos, facts, people bookmarked on my computer- it would just be too much and overwhelming to put on my site and a shame if I didn’t share it. SO, I have created myself a TUMBLR! And I absolutely LOVE this thing! This is my INSPIRATION JOURNAL- you can view it at www.lovesylvia.tumblr.com Here, you can see what has and what is currently inspiring. I mean, I find anything from colors to textures on people’s carpets to be fascinating- and then I bookmark it! Yes, I admit, I am a web-nerd- but NOT to the extreme! ;) I love finding new things- it’s like going thrifting (a favorite hobby of mine!)- you never know what you will find and when you do- you hold onto that piece dearly because you are sharing something with someone you have never met and will probably never meet. I think, that is fascinating. So yes, you will find random things on this site- I am treating it like a journal and like a dumpster- just dumping all creativity into a hole! I hope it helps you as well. Another reason I chose to create this is because I am always curious to find out what inspires an artist to create what they create? What completes their idea? Is it music? Books? Love? People? Animals? Colors? What?!

Please check it out. I post daily- it helps me. And if you find anything interesting you’d like to share, pass it along!

ha, photobooth

yes, that is me being goof. i love photo booth!

happy tuesday, it will be.

found this set this morning:

it’s beautiful. i long to find something abandoned and beautiful as this. you can create so many stories and capture little details that no one else might ever see. i love that kind of stuff.

and this is what happens when you sit in front of a mirror and try to apply make-up that you don’t usually wear- you take photos. it was interesting to photograph myself- the self in the mirror. it looks strange, i guess.

ArtandCopyFilm. It opens tomorrow in Chicago at the Music Box Theatre (classic movie house built in 1929). If you’re from Chicago, check out the showtimes and go see it! http://www.musicboxtheatre.com/features/art-copy/ It should be really good and I’m excited to see it myself.

I took a break from writing and decided I wanted to sketch something out, but I failed. I then took a magazine and I found a complicated woman to trace. I began to trace her and then became interested in how I was completely deforming her beautiful face- missing some hairs, screwing up her eyes, making her lips look like two bulgy lines with wrinkles. She’s a whole new character and, I might continue to explore this idea. So this is what I got so far, and I want to do more to it- but not sure just what. Maybe add some paints or some texture paste or threads, i don’t know. I see it framed- in some creepy way.

writing.

I was going through a box of old papers I’ve written, and I came across this one book I made for one of my fashion merchandising classes.I was reading through it, looked at it for a while, and realized how much fun I had making it. I got a 50/50 on it (hoorah) and my teacher left a little note stating: “Sylvia, this is awesome! Ready for career!” (ha!) Anyway, I miss writing and I really miss all my writing classes I took at Columbia. The people I met and who taught there were just simply amazing.I miss them.

Here are some scanned in pages from my “fashion book” (this dates back to oh- um -2005! eeek- I’m still proud and loving it though)

cover, the FASHION SCENE (ha gotta love it!)contents pagewrote about Patrick Robinson- designernewspaper article on Patrickretrospring 2006 (holy cow that was awhile ago)

On another note, I am in the process of editing&submitting a piece I am writing for MAKE-a chicago literary magazine. The next issue’s theme is magic, myth, and ritual. So far, my story is about a baby-blue lawn chair that sits on a front porch and in front of the door’s entrance, exotic trees and plants that flourish a house inside and out, and a baby-blue volvo 264GL driven by two middle-aged men. Yes, that all seems like great things to put into one magical, mythical, ritual-like story. I’m excited to see where it will take me.

Ever write something just for fun and get totally caught up in the story? As if you were, living it? These past few nights I have been dreaming more than usual. But anyway, every morning I wake up confused and I try to remember what  just happened and what I just dreamt about- but have had a difficult time solving it. However, it just occurred to me that I have been dreaming about my story- actually “living” it in my dreams. I think it has been helping me write this.

Untitled from thisgirlsylvia on Vimeo.

I know I should explain myself for making this video, and I’ll do my best but it won’t make sense. My first intention was to create something cute for someone special, but then other aspects of life and culture came in (due to some more thinking) and when all these thoughts& ideas hit me, I got stuck. I became overwhelmed and even though that is kind of natural for me, it’s not always easy. When I am stuck, I think of the most obscure ideas and projects. And when I finally come up with something(which I never really do because I never really stick to one idea anyway- the idea and composition always forms itself  to completion by trial and error and more thinking- makes no sense, I know), I am stuck trying to figure out how to construct it. So basically, I am a mess at thought. My brain is a jumble of letters that form some sentences that form some ideas that form some type of project- or, I’d like to call, an experiment. I’m like this everyday.

This video was my thinking process-thinking of what to do next because I was stuck trying to come up with a plan.

i’ll leave you with this for now…

First off, hoorah! My image submission made it onto ThisisHome. I am so excited to see the rest. The art work is really great and it’s such a neat idea overall. screen shot of This is Home.

Secondly, yesterday evening’s shoot went great! I photographed my best friend, so why wouldn’t it be!? :) We had a few (more like plenty) laughs and I got to catch some beautiful portraits of her. But I will leave you with my ultimate favorite photo (we set up our own tripod using her suitcase full of clothes and my giant bag- and it worked!) while I work on editing the rest! Thank you Julie!!

oh! I can’t forget our other friend who joined us later that evening…

Where is your home?

I found this adorable blog- This is Home. thisishomeproject.blogspot.com

Check it out! you can submit your own quote and then create a 4×6 postcard relating to any of the other quotes that are already submitted. there will be a voting poll and if your postcard will be chosen, you will receive a limited edition postcard pack of your design! how neat is that?!

I just submitted my quote and my image:
“Home Is a place where my imagination takes over. I can fly, I can float, and I can be free.”

And I chose this quote. I thought it fit one of my photographs perfectly.

home is
walking through the field behind my parent’s old house in the summer twilight, the gentle lull of August crickets in my ear and the mixed aromas of sweet wildflowers and pungent wheat, damp with the evening dew, hanging in the air.

Beautiful August.

I have been absent for a while. A lot is going on in my life and it’s all such a slow process. Wanting to move and wanting to start fresh isn’t easy. It’s quite draining actually. Nevertheless, I want to make a praise of August for its beauty. It is a peaceful month with lots of sun and wind, and fluffy clouds, and heavy drops of rain. August= my first Phish show, ever. August= pushing myself further to get to my goal faster. August=not giving up. August= being the best that I can be. August=I will be what I am and I will like it.
